weekly glee #13 . birthday edition.

i had a killer week and didn't have time to update the blog, so i decided to do it after my birthday.
it was on october, the 7th! well, i don't like my birthdays to be announced greatly, so i didn't mention anything. but now i've a great list of mentionable stuff for you so let's dive in!

1. desertions.

golden palace / russian baracks

# abandoned coal mine by tommy_kaira - this set is so stunning. i get the feeling of being knocked down by this huge coal mine.
# a school in houma, louisiana by shxtgun - so breathtaking! it had the nicest colours! you should also visit shxtgun's livejournal, she's doing great photographs :D
# ancient city hieropolis by slayer_bulia - an old greek city in the ukraine. i love such ruins almost more than recently abandoned things. i mean. THEY'RE SOOOO OLD! take a look on scala podilska as well! the photographer finds the best things!
# city of ember by thehoodwatch - thehoodwatch revisited an old power plant and found new rooms and perspectives to photograph! seriously, i love how he lets this place look so monstrous!
# soviet barracks in estonia by der5pezialist - very eerie and haunting. but soooo beautiful!
# abandoned palace in abkhazia by dmitry mordolff - again there's something beyond breathtaking in this abandoned place. i love the golden colours of these pictures and the rich details and look at the cow! isn't it cute? this place is so idyllic.

2. photogenius.

penelope tree / white powder

# freya beja by willy vanderperre for vogue september 2009 - simply amazing for its interesting clothing assortment! and somehow i like the thing with those bunny ears.
# alla kostromicheva by kevin macintosh for 125magazine #13 - this is very 'tristan & isolde' and it's very beautiful. i love photography with this ancient touch.
# sixties minutes & penelope tree - penelope tree is a 60ies icon model who showed off a very different perception of beauty in her young days . she had a very boney face, somehow kinda indian. so it wasn't that regular back then but she still was pretty much one of the most adored and demanded models. these sets are 1. an ode to her and 2. a closer look on her work and history.
# lauren hutton & mary-kate olsen by peter lindbergh for harper's bazaar october 2007 - i love the autumnal feeling about these, so fitting! also, red hair wins me over EVERY time.
# malgosia bela by tim walker for vogue uk november 2009 - this photoshoot is so crazy! the clothes are right out of a psycho's mind and it's still appealling! hot waterbags, garbage bags, cotton wool and tea cans never looked so good! tim walker remains one of my alltime favourite photographers.
# chloé sevigny by francesco carrozzini for l'uomo vogue october 2009 - i love chloé because her style is always so quirky. in this set she looks so tomboy-ish, it's great! this is my style :P

lastly, we should all take a bow and a minute to think about the photographer irving penn, who died on october 7th. his photographs had huge impact on modern fashion photographers and indeed, there are so many beautiful and timeless images to look at and to drool over. coilhouse made a little memento mori with some of his best pictures.

3. architecture & design.

wooden cabinets / korean-styled house

# mariposa chair by kate rider - this humming top-like chair is super stylish and is totally fun as well. spinning around on the floor while watching tv must be very lovely, haha :D
# veneer collection by bkm design working group - i love those cabinets! they're somehow very classy and minimalistic and then again it's really modern! definitely a want!
# the bloom lounge chair by kenneth cobonpue - what a chair! who does not want to sit in a flower?
# lim geo dang house by iroje khm architects - this house is mainly made out of wood, concrete and glass and it has so much asian influences! ( okay, it IS made by koreans ) i'd move in immediately! i love that it has so much different corners and nooks!

4. diversity.

street art combined with cartoon movie. it's fascinating to see the colours and paintings go and to see new ones coming up. really fantastic :D

these shoes are just killer! how can you walk in those first ones? and how cute are the second? especially with these mice <3 width="445" height="364">
this makes me so happy, especially the piano player, haha :D i love the quirkyness of indian movies :D

the second one is a little creepy. especially the guy hiding under woman clothes. he's the epitome of a creep, haha! and the end is a bit disturbing because of the fire. it's still wonderful because of the woman's dancing and singing <3

kings of leon . sex on fire
Sex On Fire

Kings Of Leon | MySpace Music Videos

i think i fell in love with this band. it started very slowly, but now i'm really hooked! the music fits the autumn mood i'm in and it's also a huge plus that the singer is oddly fascinating. well, let's face the truth. he's hot!

and last but not least:

i'm so excited! this movie will kick ass!

i hope you all liked the birthday edition :D
until then,
love,
mari

november: kickelhahn, himmelblau & weimar cemetery.

i had a week off in november and visited my parents ( as i often do on my vacations ). on a sunday morning we headed to the thuringian forest to climb onto the peak of the kickelhahn mountain. the kickelhahn mountain is the landmark mountain of the city of ilmenau . johann wolfgang von goethe , the famous writer & philosopher, often visited ilmenau and also climbed the kickelhahn. oftentimes he stopped at a little hut in the woods to relax for a while and on one of these stops he wrote one of his most known poems.  our little adventure didn't last the whole day, though, as we had a little date with the weimar cemetery to look after the grave of my grandparents and then to visit my cousin and his family. tiny peek onto the kickelhahn tower. thuringian woods - deep dark green. at the goethe hut. this plate shows the german version of the poem goethe wrote here. inside the hut. and here's the english translation. i love this poem so much, as ...

july '20: lake petersdorf discoveries and a plea against genocide.

the green wild meadows of malchow's sandfeld. in the west of malchow there is a big chunk of forest that spans towards plauer see, a widely 'uncultivated' area these days, but it hasn't always been this way. in my last post i mentioned the nazi munition factory that had been built in these woods, away from prying eyes of their enemies and where they also built an external subcamp for the concentration camp ravensbrück. exactly these woods we explored on a pretty sunny day, betraying the darkness that happened around these parts. isn't it weird that there are places in this world that were built or used by dark forces and horrible regimes and you vist them 80 years later and they are the most peaceful places you can imagine? sometimes my brain can't cope with the contrast of knowing what was in the past and what the present looks and feels like. it definitely leaves me with a strange impression often, kind of like a little sting in my heart and brain that is not ...
