july: fehmarn island pt. 3.

we only stayed on fehmarn for one week this year, so we didn't travel too far off. we wanted to thoroughly explore the island and since it was summer, we also didn't want to have too much planned. summer's for sunbathing and swimming ( well, usually ), and especially when you're at the sea you have to use all sunny days to your advantage. we spent quite a lot time on the various beaches of fehmarn island, just relaxing and taking in some rest.

though we did a few tiny trips back to the mainland ( for example meeting up with friends of my parents in eckernförde - where i only shot very few pictures ), we mostly stayed put on our little island.
one of the biggest trips we made was our visit to eutin, to look at the state horticultural garden show. it was a rather rainy day, but it still was nice to look at gardening ideas and stroll through the beautiful town of eutin.

the beach of eckernförde. like i wrote above, we made a small trip to meet up with acquaintances of my parents. even though the sun was out the first half of the day the weather got worse and so i subsequently made only a set of 2 pictures. maybe i did more, but since the camera kind of ate a lot of my vacation pictures this year, i only ended up with these. and something strange happened, i can't, for the heck of it, find pictures from another eckernförde trip from the past. i thought i'd link to them to make up for the lack of pictures, and to show you how beautiful eckernförde is, but upon researching in posts of the past i couldn't find any pictures at all, even though i'm pretty sure that i made quite a few back then. strange. so, i guess this means i need to come back again in the future, to properly shoot this charming city. on this picture the sun was still shining but moments later that changed dramatically. there was no way we could continue exploring the city, we mostly spent the day inside restaurants and cafes after that.

hollyhocks are typical flowers in the north of germany.

on our way back from eckernförde we stopped by a lake - the selenter see. the rain stopped at that point for a few moments and we decided to take a tiny stroll along the shore, just to get some fresh air. i must say, the gloomy weather made the lake look very eerie and haunting.

a cormorant does not care if the weather is bad or not, it just continues to hunt for prey.

and then the rain returned.

next a few photos from an evening stroll on fehmarn again, this time near presen and marienleuchte.

even when the weather is not ideal the sky makes up for it with overdramatic cloudscapes :) i think i could never get tired of these views. the sea and the sky, they both compliment each other so well.

more sheep! they are a steady element in northern landscapes.

sometimes you get rewarded with the nicest light by the sea, especially after a rainy day, when the clouds decide to part and make way for a nice clear blue sky.

dramatic clouds and lonely sheep.

mom and child.

the divide between land and sea.

and now onto the eutin pictures.
germans love their state horticultural shows - that's why every state in germany has their own little show every year in addition to the buga - the hugest event in germany. for the state of schleswig-holstein the city of eutin was the host of the annual garden exhibition in 2016 and since my family loves to look at plants and everything involved with gardening we decided to visit it. eutin itself is a real gem of a city, with a beautiful castle and park being the centerpiece of the town. it sits right next to a lake ( großer eutiner see ), which of course is what makes this town very ideal for landscape architecture/gardening purposes. unfortunately, the weather again decided to bestow us with rainfall, but this time we made the best of it.

tiny boats on sticks.

i loved this set up of repurposed packages and palettes. you can put together your own little garden with so many materials, no need to throw away things if you could easily use them as planters and storage devices!

strange figurine that i weirdly was drawn to.

blood red dahlias are the best, best, best. i think they are my spirit flowers, haha.

the park of the castle is a lush little paradise!

eutin castle. we still haven't managed to have a look at the castle's inside, even after years of visiting the city. someday, soon, i hope!

the big eutin lake.

this installation had moveable pictures and they encouraged you to choose the pictures that spoke to you the most. this was what i chose. when i look at it now, it still feels like the most perfect depiction of my personality.

there were little electrical ferries on the lake to transport you from one end of the area to the other one.

i love this statue so much. every time we visit eutin i cannot help myself anymore and take a photo of her.

view onto the castle grounds.

geese were randomly walking all over the place.

the historical public swimming bath of eutin.

baby coot on the lake.

and baby ducks hiding inside a bush! sneaky!

the sculptures were truly one of a kind.

it reminds me of the stochasticity of life and universe.

i swear, big chunks of turquoise glass belong to the things that my mind finds visually pleasing.

another pretty-coloured dahlia. i'm a dahlia afficionado.

coral roses - another visual stimulant i adore.

a bed made of flowers! nice idea for a raised flower bed.

plants you can find in a meadow that is left alone to grow however it wants.

the seven sons plant. i especially love the structure of its wood.

piglets enjoying a mud bath.

i really dig this fluoresceing plexiglass furniture. they look especially nice in darker weather, don't you think? they jump right into your eyes.

poison green pigs and lavender is a good colour combination.

on our last day on fehmarn island we spent the last few hours on the beach, where i created this stone mural in the sand :D

the very last picture is one of my parents saying goodbye to the sea in their own way.

november: kickelhahn, himmelblau & weimar cemetery.

i had a week off in november and visited my parents ( as i often do on my vacations ). on a sunday morning we headed to the thuringian forest to climb onto the peak of the kickelhahn mountain. the kickelhahn mountain is the landmark mountain of the city of ilmenau . johann wolfgang von goethe , the famous writer & philosopher, often visited ilmenau and also climbed the kickelhahn. oftentimes he stopped at a little hut in the woods to relax for a while and on one of these stops he wrote one of his most known poems.  our little adventure didn't last the whole day, though, as we had a little date with the weimar cemetery to look after the grave of my grandparents and then to visit my cousin and his family. tiny peek onto the kickelhahn tower. thuringian woods - deep dark green. at the goethe hut. this plate shows the german version of the poem goethe wrote here. inside the hut. and here's the english translation. i love this poem so much, as ...

july '20: lake petersdorf discoveries and a plea against genocide.

the green wild meadows of malchow's sandfeld. in the west of malchow there is a big chunk of forest that spans towards plauer see, a widely 'uncultivated' area these days, but it hasn't always been this way. in my last post i mentioned the nazi munition factory that had been built in these woods, away from prying eyes of their enemies and where they also built an external subcamp for the concentration camp ravensbrück. exactly these woods we explored on a pretty sunny day, betraying the darkness that happened around these parts. isn't it weird that there are places in this world that were built or used by dark forces and horrible regimes and you vist them 80 years later and they are the most peaceful places you can imagine? sometimes my brain can't cope with the contrast of knowing what was in the past and what the present looks and feels like. it definitely leaves me with a strange impression often, kind of like a little sting in my heart and brain that is not ...
