the village haffkrug and its surroundings.

haffkrug is a small village which is part of the municipality of scharbeutz. it is the place we are always staying in for several reasons: it's remote, it's quiet, it's not overpopulated and as i lovingly tell people: it's a retirement place. scharbeutz, the main town of the municipality is much more of a vacation destination: beach parties, sport activities, and socializing mainly take place in that location. don't get me wrong on that, i love haffkrug for exactly that doziness, because as you all know, i'm someone who needs secluded regions to relax and calm down. andshould there be a need of wanting to go out and putting yourself into a populated area you can easily do so, as scharbeutz and timmendorfer strand are not far away and can be reached per pedes and bike.

the beautiful sea in the evening. in the back you can see the coastline of timmendorfer strand.

i love walking on the beach in the evening, because isn't the light situation the most precious thing in that time of the day? blue hour love!

a typical thatching roof with a modern twist.

we experienced a lot of sunsets like this one while we were there. if i had to choose between going to a party or watching a sunset i'd definitely choose the sunset. everytime it's like a miracle of nature.

gulls populating the beach.

this was shot in sierksdorf, a village next to haffkrug.

more rooftops. i clearly love this traditional way of roofing.

even the bus stops were covered in reeds!

a more windy evening at the beach. here we are in scharbeutz.

traditional looking houses are my kind of thing.

christmas lights in the summer? yes, of course, why not? makes for beautiful night sceneries.

made this picture while biking to neustadt in holstein.

another blue hour walk! it seriously is my favourite time of the day. there's something about the light that wraps me into a warm and fuzzy feeling of relaxation. plus the whooshing of the waves and the salty breeze on your skin and in your hair... it is just perfect.

november: kickelhahn, himmelblau & weimar cemetery.

i had a week off in november and visited my parents ( as i often do on my vacations ). on a sunday morning we headed to the thuringian forest to climb onto the peak of the kickelhahn mountain. the kickelhahn mountain is the landmark mountain of the city of ilmenau . johann wolfgang von goethe , the famous writer & philosopher, often visited ilmenau and also climbed the kickelhahn. oftentimes he stopped at a little hut in the woods to relax for a while and on one of these stops he wrote one of his most known poems.  our little adventure didn't last the whole day, though, as we had a little date with the weimar cemetery to look after the grave of my grandparents and then to visit my cousin and his family. tiny peek onto the kickelhahn tower. thuringian woods - deep dark green. at the goethe hut. this plate shows the german version of the poem goethe wrote here. inside the hut. and here's the english translation. i love this poem so much, as ...

july '20: lake petersdorf discoveries and a plea against genocide.

the green wild meadows of malchow's sandfeld. in the west of malchow there is a big chunk of forest that spans towards plauer see, a widely 'uncultivated' area these days, but it hasn't always been this way. in my last post i mentioned the nazi munition factory that had been built in these woods, away from prying eyes of their enemies and where they also built an external subcamp for the concentration camp ravensbrück. exactly these woods we explored on a pretty sunny day, betraying the darkness that happened around these parts. isn't it weird that there are places in this world that were built or used by dark forces and horrible regimes and you vist them 80 years later and they are the most peaceful places you can imagine? sometimes my brain can't cope with the contrast of knowing what was in the past and what the present looks and feels like. it definitely leaves me with a strange impression often, kind of like a little sting in my heart and brain that is not ...
