while we were staying in strasbourg we decided to visit freiburg im breisgau, a city situated in the border triangle germany/france/switzerland. it's situated near the western foot of the black forest and the 'schauinsland'. it's also know for it's medieval inner city with the minster and because of it's reputation of a 'green city'. i liked this city, but the time we stayed here was too short again. when i now think about it, i think it was strange to visit a german city while we actually had our stay in france. maybe i would've liked it more to explore some france sights instead of driving to freiburg, but then again, i got to see another part of germany that holds a lot of charme and thus belongs on my future travelling list.
the freiburg minster. i wasn't that impressed of the minster like i was of the strasbourg cathedral. but there were a few gems to be seen anyway.
colourful portal.
a group of women around jesus. the holy grave.
l. had promised her mother to light a candle everytime we would be visiting a church or cathedral. it's beautiful to look at.
another part of an altar.
this is the historical merchants hall.
dragon gargoyles.
the river dreisam flows through freiburg in a system called 'freiburger bächle'. it's a canal system throughout the city, sometimes you can see bigger canals and then again you have really small ones.
a girl and boy sitting near the canal.
sometimes you see a crocodile swimming around - build out of stones.
this part of the city was really charming, i loved it.
the portrals of the archiepiscopal chair freiburg. this building was amazing.
my first thought was: art nouveau! but it turns out that the architect was rooted in the historism art movement. which is not that far fetched from art nouveau, though, because art nouveau has its roots in historism :) i'm getting better with determining architecture styles :)
all the small details of this house, i could've spent at least an hour admiring all of them.
duck door handles.
when we returned to strasbourg in the evening we made our way to the cutest thai restaurant in town, situated in the medieval city. the atmosphere was great and the food, too! it was called chan chira.
on our way back to the hotel, illuminated barracks.
the reflections were great.
i loved how this towers was illuminated.
our view out of our hotel window again - the next day, shortly before we said good-bye to strasbourg. it's the cathedral in the back.
and more sunny last moment pictures.
and thus, we said good-bye to strasbourg and france and drove back to germany to visit l.'s parents.
