french way of living?

the next batch of pictures are from two weeks ago.
i drove back home to thuringia to welcome our french friends of our sister city!

it was raining all the time they were here. it was a bit unnerving, but we tried to enjoy it anyway. well, and my french is absolutely catastrophic. i'm glad that i'm still able to understand it at least a tiny bit. that was another thing that got me upset. i'm sad that i don't have the time to polish my french. damn work...

shadow gave birth to 4 little kitties. well, they all died but one. here you can see two, one of them we found dead 2 days later. i was so sad. i hear the last one is healthy, though, and my brother and his girlfriend are pondering to take it home. one of shadow's older kids, samson, would have a new sister then!

we made a trip to erfurt, the capital of thuringia. i always disliked erfurt, but i've fallen in love again. the old city is so beautiful. i miss my home country a lot sometimes.

the dome of erfurt.

city hall.

art hall of erfurt.

a very old letter box!

miniature of erfurt's old city. it was made for blind people. it had descriptions in braille and i was tempted to close my eyes and let my fingers do the seeing. it was nice!

on the krämerbrücke.

the schokoladenmanufaktur ( chocolate manufacture ). the BEST chocolate shop i know. you can buy the most delicious truffles and pralineés here and they're all handmade!

'humans are felling trees to produce paper. and they try to fill the paper with the emptiness of their heads.'

street art.

hanging paper puppets.

the river gera.

then we drove to the ega ( garden exhibition of erfurt ). they had a cute inspiration exhibit about how to decorate rooms. like the land of milk and honey.

i loved those glass stones.

um. well i like cacti. a lot. even they look like penises sometimes, though, haha XD
and with this little guy i leave you for tonight.

november: kickelhahn, himmelblau & weimar cemetery.

i had a week off in november and visited my parents ( as i often do on my vacations ). on a sunday morning we headed to the thuringian forest to climb onto the peak of the kickelhahn mountain. the kickelhahn mountain is the landmark mountain of the city of ilmenau . johann wolfgang von goethe , the famous writer & philosopher, often visited ilmenau and also climbed the kickelhahn. oftentimes he stopped at a little hut in the woods to relax for a while and on one of these stops he wrote one of his most known poems.  our little adventure didn't last the whole day, though, as we had a little date with the weimar cemetery to look after the grave of my grandparents and then to visit my cousin and his family. tiny peek onto the kickelhahn tower. thuringian woods - deep dark green. at the goethe hut. this plate shows the german version of the poem goethe wrote here. inside the hut. and here's the english translation. i love this poem so much, as ...

july '20: lake petersdorf discoveries and a plea against genocide.

the green wild meadows of malchow's sandfeld. in the west of malchow there is a big chunk of forest that spans towards plauer see, a widely 'uncultivated' area these days, but it hasn't always been this way. in my last post i mentioned the nazi munition factory that had been built in these woods, away from prying eyes of their enemies and where they also built an external subcamp for the concentration camp ravensbrück. exactly these woods we explored on a pretty sunny day, betraying the darkness that happened around these parts. isn't it weird that there are places in this world that were built or used by dark forces and horrible regimes and you vist them 80 years later and they are the most peaceful places you can imagine? sometimes my brain can't cope with the contrast of knowing what was in the past and what the present looks and feels like. it definitely leaves me with a strange impression often, kind of like a little sting in my heart and brain that is not ...
