as mentioned in my previous post luxembourg is well known for its old fortifications which are listed as a world heritage site by the unesco. they are really quite impressive and span around the whole city. since our time in town was quite brief we didn't enter the casemates or the old quarter of the town at all, which i now am a little sad about, because after all that is what i wanted to see the most. maybe i should return to luxembourg on my own again to have a more detailed look at everything.  my overall impression of luxembourg city was that it was quite a quirky and open-minded place, with lots of interesting localities to explore. the grand ducal palace . this elephant is part of the elephant parade - a social enterprise which wants to raise awareness for elephant issues. it stood in front of the ducal's palace. lovely stone embellishments. the luxembourg city museum . the area where the city museum was situated was quite a young quar...

the state of saarland has a very special neighbor - the little country luxembourg . only half a million inhabitants live here, so you can imagine what a tiny country it is. its capital is luxembourg city , which already has about 110 000 citizens living there ( but actually feels a lot bigger due to the fact that several european institutions are having their headquarters here and many people commute for work and invigorate the city with their presence - it seriously felt like a city such as frankfurt or even a tiny berlin! ).  my mother had heard that you could buy cigarettes for less money in luxembourg, so she said that for that fact alone she would want to visit, haha - as it turned out they were not that much cheaper and she ended up NOT buying any - the downside of smoking :P ). luxembourg was never really on my radar until i once saw a tv documentation about it and was intrigued by the beautiful inner core of luxembourg city. that was what i wanted to see basically. unf...
