april: ilmpark gems.

i love to come back to weimar, i think i already mentioned a few times how much i love this little city. my gynaecologist is still situated here, so i always have a reason to definitely visit my mother's home town. after my appointments i always take a stroll in the park on the ilm, a park in the middle of weimar - basically the green heart of the town. it was still cold and relatively bare of greenery, but the park has more to offer than just nature and the river ilm . there are a few little sights scattered through-out the park and it offers quite a lot of beautiful perspectives. this place is directly situated next to my doctor's office and it was the residence of johann carl august musäus - a popular author & collector of folk stories back in his days. today it's used by an albert schweitzer foundation as a museum. ilm river. in the background you can see the reithaus - the european youth education and meeting center resides here. it's qui...

april: the gathering of the amphibians.

when i visited my parents we went picking for wood garlic , which is actually pretty difficult if you don't know the right places. i, for example, have been on the look-out for wood garlic fields for several years now, but i still haven't found one in my area. wood garlic ( also commonly knows as ramsons or bear's garlic ) grows only a few weeks in april, sometimes it's still available in may.  my parents however did find a huge wood garlic field in weimar, and they go there every year for picking until their basket is filled to the brim. they use the herb for making their own pesto and herb butter, or just for seasoning meals. a tiny patch of the whole wild garlic field. there was so much, i think it would serve at least 2000 people. the field is right next to a very important memorial in weimar. these fenced in trees are part of the buchenwald memorial ( one of the many german concentration camps of world war II ), behind the fence there is a graveyard of...

april: garden in full bloom.

in the middle of april i went home to my parents for a week of vacation and boy, did i need that. i did a lot of walking and exploring on my own, but also took in the beauty that is my homeland. our garden just started to bloom while i was there. in my humble opinion, my parents do have the best garden i know, there's always something to discover! little magnolia tree blossoms! and buds. my cat shadow being overly attentive to garden activities. she's living outside all year round because my mother has a cat hair allergy, but she's been loyal for 6 years now and loves her people a lot, even though she's got some kind of bitchy personality. don't hassle with her - she has really sharp claws. the sweetest moments are those when she lays down right next to you on the deck chair and purrs and cuddles with you. it is rare, but when she does it, it's really heart-warming and really a proof of her love. a blackbird laid eggs in the woodshe...

april: the awakening.

walking by the rhine is always making me feel wide awake & conscious. no matter what time of the year it is. i tend to forget what calming effect water has on me. rivers, lakes, the big wide sea, all of them contribute to my wellbeing. when i can feel the wind on my skin and hear the waves crashing against the shores it's like my personal heaven. i went for a walk that started in schierstein harbour and brought me to walluf , a little village situated a few kilometres away from schierstein. the storks built their nests again! schierstein is the perfect birth place for storks and they return here year after year. breeding. searching for food. boat harbour. the little swimming house on the left is called ' die schwabbel ' ( wobble in german - refers to the fact that the little house is constantly wobbling due to waves ) - it's a little snack-bar. one of walluf's medieval squares. one of the best things about spring are bloomi...
