october: walk around burg-hohenstein.

most people love to spend their time on sundays at home, relaxing, sleeping in, lounging etc. not me. i will always try to get out of the house to do a walk or hike, because during the week my life only takes place in my workplace and my flat. and that's it. so on sundays i NEED to get out because of a severe case of cabin fever. for this october hike i chose the area of burg-hohenstein as my next destination. i think i walked 12 kilometres on that day, but i'm not actually sure ( i guess it was more about 10 ). it was definitely a long one. i started out on the road to burg-hohenstein ( neuer weg ) and went along the river aar through the woods. then i took a path that lead to a ridge called gieshübel and then it wasn't that far anymore until i made my way back into the village from where i walked the neuer weg back down into the aar valley where my car was parked. at one point i thought i will never get out of the woods by evening, but i made it in the end, because i walked a very fast pace then. my feet hurt a lot after this, but it was nothing compared to the beauty i've seen on this hike. the views, the sights, the nature. it's just what really calms me down and makes me feel like a decent person.

say hello to my spiffy patent leather loafers ( very practical hiking shoes, haha ) and stripy socks. totally hiking suitable ( not ). to my excuse, it wasn't a hike trip per se, more like a very long and fast walk. also, i actually don't care about appropriate hiking gear.

the aar river. shortly before i shot this picture a heron flew up from the river bed and it was a magical sight.

beautiful stone structures.

yellow autumn trees.

i simply LOVED the rocks on my path. look at these structures, i just can't get enough looking at them. yes, you definitely can call me a rock and gem and stone aficionado.

slates over slates.

this tree fell so perfectly. you could easily walk through under it, without having to bend.

such a peaceful setting.

more tree obstacles.

this pond seems to be the source of the little river kohlbach.

then i arrived at the gieshübel. there was a farm back in the days, but all that is left is a well. and this enormous and gorgeous tree.

finally i made it to the open plains of burg-hohenstein. where white horses grazed peacefully.

and dark and fair brown ones, too...

and spotted ones. it was a horse heaven up there.

and the beautiful colours of autumn were everywhere.

autumnal decorations.

rowan tree with fruits.

the evil colour red.

i finally reached burg-hohenstein. with it's perfect castle. i've been here before a few times, it's one of the nicest castles around here. there's also a medieval market taking place here annually which is really intimate and small and lovely.

back on the road. i walked the last bit of my hike along this road. psh, it's not dangerous at all :O

in the forests.

it's that time of the year again.

july '20: lake petersdorf discoveries and a plea against genocide.

the green wild meadows of malchow's sandfeld. in the west of malchow there is a big chunk of forest that spans towards plauer see, a widely 'uncultivated' area these days, but it hasn't always been this way. in my last post i mentioned the nazi munition factory that had been built in these woods, away from prying eyes of their enemies and where they also built an external subcamp for the concentration camp ravensbrück. exactly these woods we explored on a pretty sunny day, betraying the darkness that happened around these parts. isn't it weird that there are places in this world that were built or used by dark forces and horrible regimes and you vist them 80 years later and they are the most peaceful places you can imagine? sometimes my brain can't cope with the contrast of knowing what was in the past and what the present looks and feels like. it definitely leaves me with a strange impression often, kind of like a little sting in my heart and brain that is not ...

july '20: a boat ride across the lakes.

starting point in malchow harbour. when you're in the mecklenburg lakelands you need to do some of the many boat rides they offer up all around the various lakes! that's really sort of the best way to get a little overview over the many lake destinations and being on the water and feeling the wind on your face ( or the rain 😂 ) and seeing the life in the water and the landscapes around you, it's just special, i think! they often also tell you historic bits and pieces of the lakes, informing you on possible sights you should seek out, too! when you book a tour, you can choose between big day trips crossing several lakes, depending from where you start, or you can choose short rides that last a couple of hours and perhaps even have a theme like a sunset tour or a romance tour ( possibly with romantic dinner for two options 😉 ). from malchow you can choose between two tour providers: reederei pickran & the blau-weiße-flotte . there are tours that include up to 7 lakes, ...
