windy beach days.

some people recommended pelzerhaken & rettin to us, so we decided to head there. as far as we could make out they weren't highly interesting villages, but walking near the beach is always a good alternative. no matter on which beach you are, every single one is special. a landmark of pelzerhaken is its former telecommunication tower of the marine. there is a beach promenade right next to it with activity devices ( that we used for fun, haha ) and there was also a small rock exhibit. sometimes we walked through dune openings to see what was going on on the beach - and we marvelled at the kite surfers that made a lot of daring feats such as jumping high and making saltos in the air. that beach promenade also leads to rettin, another district of neustadt in holstein. we made our way there and stayed for a while as there was a little village fair going on.

on another evening we decided to visit timmendorfer strand again. it was a particularly stormy evening, the waves were pretty large. a few surfers were out there trying to catch a good wave and sometimes even were successful! we also fed old bread to the gulls ( who catched the crumbs in flight - it was an amazing sight as they hovered over us in the air. ) on that evening my camera started to act out, more than once i couldn't turn it on and if i managed to get it going it immediately went out again after i shot one photo. these were the first indications of camera death. i have to admit, the battery case was a little bit cracked already but it turned out that the crack spread further and the lid wouldn't hold itself onto the camera anymore. a few days later the whole thing broke off and that was the death of my camera. rest in piece, dear one.

i haven't gotten myself a new one yet, but i heard that my parents have a nice birthday gift for me, so i'm guessing i won't be without a camera any longer. i'm a bit excited to see what kind of camera it is - my father said it is a much bigger one and even better than his own. no compact camera, unfortunately, but the quality of my pictures might be improving ;)

the telecommunications tower.

the rock exhibition was interesting as the rocks were worked rocks. how long must've been taken to carve and break structures into them? what came out was really surreal.

seaside landscapes.

i shot a lot more pictures of the kite surfers, but as they were equal in so many aways i just decided on two. let me tell you, we watched them for at least an hour or until we decided to walk on. it was really mesmerizing & absorbing to watch these guys.

the sea horse fountain in timmendorfer strand. the spa gardens are also populated by rabbits. such a joy to observe them.

crumb-fetching sea gulls. it was really fun!

my mother looking out onto the sea.

the last picture of the evening, an interesting art sculpture near the new tea house in timmendorfer strand. ( i wanted to make pictures of that building, too, but alas, my camera was in a state of exhaustion by then )

in the forests.

it's that time of the year again.

july '20: lake petersdorf discoveries and a plea against genocide.

the green wild meadows of malchow's sandfeld. in the west of malchow there is a big chunk of forest that spans towards plauer see, a widely 'uncultivated' area these days, but it hasn't always been this way. in my last post i mentioned the nazi munition factory that had been built in these woods, away from prying eyes of their enemies and where they also built an external subcamp for the concentration camp ravensbrück. exactly these woods we explored on a pretty sunny day, betraying the darkness that happened around these parts. isn't it weird that there are places in this world that were built or used by dark forces and horrible regimes and you vist them 80 years later and they are the most peaceful places you can imagine? sometimes my brain can't cope with the contrast of knowing what was in the past and what the present looks and feels like. it definitely leaves me with a strange impression often, kind of like a little sting in my heart and brain that is not ...

july '20: a boat ride across the lakes.

starting point in malchow harbour. when you're in the mecklenburg lakelands you need to do some of the many boat rides they offer up all around the various lakes! that's really sort of the best way to get a little overview over the many lake destinations and being on the water and feeling the wind on your face ( or the rain 😂 ) and seeing the life in the water and the landscapes around you, it's just special, i think! they often also tell you historic bits and pieces of the lakes, informing you on possible sights you should seek out, too! when you book a tour, you can choose between big day trips crossing several lakes, depending from where you start, or you can choose short rides that last a couple of hours and perhaps even have a theme like a sunset tour or a romance tour ( possibly with romantic dinner for two options 😉 ). from malchow you can choose between two tour providers: reederei pickran & the blau-weiße-flotte . there are tours that include up to 7 lakes, ...
