borkum: extraterrestrial hike & east frisian tea hour.

the beaches on borkum are really wonderful, especially when you go the beaches in the north and northeast. they are the most natural ones, with high dunes and soft white-grey-ish sand. they are also the beaches that are the most unfrequented. we started this walk on the main beach and walked towards the norddünen ( were we ended up in a café to try a typical east-frisian tea menu - which i got really addicted to the following days ). here is a detailed map of borkum . the landscape was wonderful, with algae colouring the remaining flood puddles green, and green & grey was the whole landscape - which left an big impression on us, as it looked like we stranded on a different planet. the views were wide, almost as if you were in a desert, but a very rank one. it was seriously beautiful to walk in those foreign landscapes, a landscape that i had never encountered before in my life. it was a freeing experience, the open lands and sea next to us, the roaring thunder of the waves tinglin...

borkum: first exploration

on our first day we decided to see what the city of borkum had to offer. borkum has around 5100 inhabitants, so it's indeed more of a big village than a big city. the paths are very close-knit, you are in nature in just a few minutes and after a few days it feels like you know every nook and cranny already. but borkum is really charming and has a lot of activities to offer, we didn't have a single day where we felt bored or tired of the city and island, thanks to long walks around the island, meeting up with my friend, going out and trying the specialties of east frisia, boat trips to seal sandbanks and bus trips on the only big road on borkum ( which is actually almost car free - you only can drive to your house and back to the harbour, so it's really useless to take your car with you, unless you live there all year long. ) we wanted to see even more, but due to the weather oftentimes things we booked were canceled. which didn't prevent us from exploring this beautifu...

borkum: the crossing.

visiting the island of borkum was a first for me. i've never made vacations on an island before, and i've never been to the north sea as well. a friend of mine was residing on borkum for 6 months and she invited me to come visit her and get to know 'her' island. my parents and me went for it, as we always wanted to see what the north sea has to offer. and it did not disappoint! the wadden sea is something i had yet to experience, the baltic sea has close to no tidal movements, therefore it was new to me to see the same beach in different conditions throughout the day. unfortunately, because of unideal weather conditions, we didn't go on a mudflat hiking tour, but i'm sure i will get around that next time i'll be visiting.  the journey & stay up there made me want to discover the region east frisia even more and i have a plan for next year already doing a little hiking trip from wilhelmshaven to emden and then revisiting borkum for a few days. it...
